#dwsr - Cathays Cemetery

Madame Vastra
Yesterday filming took place at Cathays Cemetery in Cardiff. We arrived at 8am (for once, we were early birds! - the close location helped somewhat.) and they were already filming by the time we found somewhere to settle down to quietly watch. At first we sat quite a way away because they were doing wide camera angles across the graveyard (which is massive) but later in the day we could sit far closer to them, by a small chapel.

From 8am to lunchtime they seemed to be filming scenes with a lot of the cast - initially with Tom Ward, the two children we saw in Newport, Neve McIntosh (Madame Vastra), Catrin Stewart (Jenny) and Matt Smith (The Doctor.) Later Tom Ward and the children left and Matt, Neve and Catrin continued to film scenes. By this point we were closer to the action and could hear some dialogue and see The Doctor had a massive bunch of flowers (we also saw the crew carrying a bunch of lilies towards the set):

For the morning scenes they seemed to be putting a lot of white cloud across the graveyard - to begin with it looked more like smoke (possibly appropriate anyway, considering the Victorian nature of the clothes that were worn by the cast) but later they directed it on to the pavement and grass and it looked more like an icy layer of frost or snow with snowflakes swirling in the air. They also sprayed the lower parts of the trees and the graves with it. They had different methods of creating this snow/smoke effect: they used small smoke gun type devices and then wafted it across the scene, a larger version of them for dressing the scene with frost, and they also had a large inflated tube - about a foot in height and dragged across 100m of the graveyard. It had holes punched into it and sprayed out a continuous fog of tiny white specks.

The snowy graveyard.

After lunch the rest of the cast had departed and Jenna Louise Coleman had arrived. She was dressed in modern day clothes, still sporting the red bag she has been seen carrying previously. She was wandering back and forth between where they were filming and the toilet to change with a wardrobe assistant, each carrying alternative clothes for her to wear. She tried on several different outfits for the scene before they started to film. Sadly we couldn't hear any dialogue. After a while the crew began to pack up, with cameras and boom mikes being packed away. They continued to film during this (presumably it was a scene that required less equipment) and then at about 4pm they left.
